Armcon Cementech SCD4M-100 volumetric concrete mixer has been chosen for a dual role on a groundworks contract at the Westward Cross Retail Park in Broadstairs, Kent. While its secondary purpose is to produce lean mix concrete for general construction, it is mainly tasked with soil stabilisation as part of this contractors contribution on behalf of the primary contractor. “This
is the first time, as far as we know,
that a volumetric mixer has been
used this way in the UK,” says their Operations
Manager. “We had
known of Armcon’s products for a
couple
of years, and believed they would be suitable". |

"We needed an on-site volumetric mixer: this is a job that simply could not be done via a batching plant.” As the machine had not been used for soil stabilisation before, the specification has evolved in service. The original 100mm diameter auger has been replaced with a dry cast version, and the donkey engine and hydraulic pump have both been upgraded to handle the clay content of the site, while a specially adapted high-flow water system deals with the specialist requirements of soil remediation. The existing silt, sand and clay soil at the Broadstairs development is initially treated by WR2500K Wirtgen soil recyclers which mix it with quicklime powder, to break down and pre-condition the soil. It is then screened into the SCD4M-100, whose uniquely precise delivery systems allow a highly controlled percentage of cement and water to be added, giving exactly the required density and strength of soil. The unit is capable of generating up to 25m³ of stable soil per hour. In addition to soil remediation, the contractor is also providing drainage and substructure work, ground floor slabs, external yards, car parks and pedestrian paving to a value of £7m on the Westward Park project which will accommodate such major retailers as Marks & Spencer and Debenhams. The contractor is fully
accredited to both ISO 9000 quality
and ISO 14001 environmental management
standards. |
